In the face of less federal funding for state longitudinal data systems and common educational data standards, we need a long-term, sustainable strategy to maintain education data systems within and across states. One strategy, proposed by Mark Schneider, Andrew Rice, and Dan Ralyea in this article, is a regional, state-led approach like the EdTech Collaboratory. Instead of every state building and rebuilding expensive, one-off solutions, states can collaborate to develop shared, adaptable state-driven technology that serves students, families, and policymakers.
